Arsenal title race: Can Arteta stay focused?

It’s a pivotal moment in the Arsenal title race, but manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear that focus can’t be lost for a split second.

After an epic European night, Arsenal have qualified for the UEFA Champions League final with a victory over Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, the Blues are in contention for the Championship lead.

Arteta is not letting emotions get the better of him, however. He tells his team that it is just that they need to “be here.” There are a few matches left to go and every second of their current campaign is crucial if they are to secure their first league title in eight years, since 2004.

The next test is against West Ham United, who are struggling to avoid relegation and are in good form at home. Such a setup is going to be difficult given the attention that’s being paid to the European final against Paris Saint-Germain.

But Arteta has drawn the line. He says that all energy has to be put into West Ham ahead of finals. His manner is disciplined without hype, a key aspect of his approach.

On the tactical front, Arsenal have been successful this season on the basis of control, structure and hunger. It would be a waste of months of effort if they lose focus now. Everyone knows a trial could change the game, in particular if the opponents are still close by.

This step is the stage that determines champions. If Arsenal keep their heads, it’s a very good opportunity to make history. But as Arteta makes clear, it’s not over yet – it’s all about what comes next.
