Arteta Says Trophies Key to Future

Mikel Arteta has indicated clearly that any form of renewing his contract with Arsenal after 2027 would be subject to him achieving tangible success despite citing that the club has made great progresses during his tenure in charge.

This weekend marks the sixth anniversary of the managerial tenure of Arsenal, who has managed to lead the dramatic turnaround in the performance and consistency of his team since taking the helm in 2019. Although he started his tenure with a win in FA Cup in 2020, the following seasons have been characterized by missed chances rather than trophies.

Arsenal have placed second in three consecutive seasons in the premier league and they are once again in the title race, they are two points ahead of the top of the table. They have also made it to the quarter-finals of the League Cup this season keeping several competitions alive.

But Arteta claimed that it is not sufficient to improve. In a speech on Friday, he pointed out that the next several months will see him prove whether he should be given an extension of his present contract or not. Arteta said that it needs a manager to be here tomorrow.

The Spaniard did not buy the notion that trophy drought in Arsenal is an indication of poor performances. Rather, he cited the unprecedented competition in the premier leagues which he labeled as the most challenging period that the league had experienced.

Arteta emphasized the records of the club that he has broken in his tenure in an attempt to demonstrate that the club is on an upward trend despite the absence of silverware so far. He proposed that long term success is getting Arsenal into the top league though he admitted that the ultimate measure was trophies.

Arsenal have a match against Everton later that same day and this will be important as they seek to continue with the race against the title. As more hopes are formed, the remarks by Arteta are that the new stage of his Arsenal project is supposed to be characterized by trophies and not progress alone.
