According to reports, Chelsea broke the Guinness transfer record on Sunday by signing San Diego Wave defender Naomi Girma.
Chelsea reportedly shattered the previous global record set in February 2024 by paying £685,000 for Racheal Kundananji, and they paid £900,000 ($1.1 million) for Girma. The 24-year-old was brought onto the pitch by the Women’s Super League winners before their match against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Being here makes me joyful. Girma addressed the Chelsea website in an unauthentic way. It was Chelsea’s winning mindset, culture, players, and staff that drew me in. Here, you can develop and learn as much as you can.
In January, Sonia Bompastor signed Girma as Chelsea Women’s first player. After Chelsea defender Kadeisha Buchanan had an anterior cruciate ligament injury that could keep her out of action for the season, Bompastor looked for her.
Last year, Chelsea surpassed the British record when they paid £384,000 to sign Levantean striker Mayra Ramirez. This price surpasses that record.
In 2023, US Soccer named Naomi Girma the female player of the year. She played a significant role in the American team that took home the gold medal from the previous year’s Olympics.
Paul Green, the head of women’s football at Chelsea, says Naomi is a talented defender who is only starting to reach her full potential.
