At Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 for their third straight Bundesliga loss, deepening their predicament. It puts extra pressure on Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin, who had club bosses’ support despite their midweek loss to lowly Holstein Kiel.
The visitors’ first chance was a ninth-minute header that hit the post. Eintracht broke clear nine minutes later and Hugo Ekitike, who started the move, finished it, surprising them.
Omar Marmoush was out for Eintracht, and Ansgar Knauff’s curling shot hit the post four minutes later.
The club announced before the game that another club was in talks to sign Marmoush.
Manchester City are allegedly close to signing the striker, who congratulated his Eintracht teammates on the pitch after the game in what was likely his last outing in front of those fans.
Dortmund, who travel to Bologna for the Champions League on Tuesday, failed to equalise despite pressing for a penalty twice. Serhou Guirassy was booked for going down in the box twice.
Dortmund’s third loss in three league matches this year came when Oscar Hojlund charged into the area with too much room.
Dortmund midfielder Pascal Gross remarked, “At the end of the day football is a results-based sport and we could not be successful today.”
“We did well in the second half, but that’s the standard. Okay performance, but that’s normal. In the end, we lost and got nothing from the game.”
Eintracht’s third straight win kept them in third place with 36 points, two behind reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen, who play Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday. Dortmund are 10th out of 25.
