Infantino FIFA support has strengthened as Mexico and Argentina’s football associations publicly backed FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid escalating criticism over governance concerns.
The backing is a result of a measure that was recently withdrawn from the FIFA World Cup, aiming to sell a part of the future commercial rights, which sparked an extensive discussion in international football institutions. Several federations have raised concerns about the implications for transparency and central control, while Mexico and Argentina have taken a stance against leadership change.
However, Mexico’s Football Federation (FMF), which was one of the hosts of the recently finished FIFA World Cup 2026, has taken a different view than the rest of its regional confederation, CONCACAF. The confederation had previously requested a “comprehensive reckoning” about Infantino’s presidency, which reflected a lack of unity among regional governance bodies.
In the official communication, the FMF stressed the importance of respecting FIFA’s institutional framework, which excludes parallel processes and/or external interference to FIFA’s governance mechanisms. The statement was in line with Infantino’s views and was a message of unity when settling issues within the FIFA system.
The support adds to Infantino’s backing from influential football nations, especially ones with a competitive and commercial interest in the global tournaments. This dual endorsement is a reflection of the balance that needs to be added into the polarized governance environment.
From an institutional point of view, the issue reflects a growing gap between federations focused on reform and those more interested in maintaining the structure. These underlying tensions have not been addressed with the withdrawal of the commercial rights offer, but rather have been transferred to the topic of leadership legitimacy and future forms of governance.
