Joey Jones, Liverpool Legend, Dies at 70

Worldwide media reported on Tuesday that former Wales, Liverpool, and Wrexham defender Joey Jones had died at 70 after a long illness. Left-back Jones has played for Wrexham, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Huddersfield Town and has 72 international caps.

Mickey Thomas said that his best friend died but his memories will live.

“This morning I lost my best friend and soulmate, Sir Joey, our memories will never fade,” Thomas wrote on X.

“My heart crushed today. Love you Sir Joey, RIP. I send Janice and her family my sympathy.”

John Aldridge, a former Liverpool striker, called him a fantastic person and inspiration.

“More sad news folks, Joey Jones died last night,” Aldridge remarked.

“What a kind man and inspirational full back who dedicated his heart and soul to each team he played for!

“Our thoughts are with Joey’s family! I’m lucky to have met him often. RIP top dude.”

FAW chief executive Noel Mooney said everyone in the club lamented the loss of an icon.

He was the first Welshman to win the European Cup after Liverpool’s 1977 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome.
