Premier League: Burnley and Leeds Promoted

Burnley overcame Sheffield United 2-1 on Saturday to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League and send Championship leaders Leeds United up too.

Leeds defeated Stoke City 6-0 to go top of the Championship with two matches left on 94 points. They needed Burnley to not lose to third-placed Sheffield United to finish in the top two. After Tom Cannon’s equaliser, Burnley’s Josh Brownhill scored twice.

Relegated previous season, Scott Parker’s side joined Leeds on 94 points, leaving Sheffield United on 86 and facing the possibility of joining them in the playoffs. Leeds took a 5-0 lead at Elland Road as Joel Piroe scored a hat-trick in the first 20 minutes and another before halftime.

Leeds will return to the Premier League after three seasons there after being relegated in 2023. Fourth-placed Despite a 1-0 home loss to Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland are secured a playoff spot.

Fifth-placed Bristol City defeated 3-1 to relegation rivals Luton Town, although Coventry City had a similar loss to bottom club Plymouth Argyle. Middlesbrough, seventh in the table, lost 2-1 against Sheffield Wednesday despite taking an early lead.

Bristol City has 67 points, Coventry 66, and Middlesbrough 63 with two games left. Millwall and Blackburn, with 63 and 62 points, are also in the playoffs.
