Newcastle United stated on Saturday that Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade has joined the club on a long-term contract.
International media reports say the transfer is for £69 million (roughly $93.21 million), a considerable expenditure for the club. Woltemade, 23, beats the mark set by Swedish striker Alexander Isak, who joined Newcastle for £63 million three years earlier.
Woltemade made his Werder Bremen Bundesliga debut at 17, a club record. He later joined Stuttgart, where he scored 17 goals in 33 games the year before, demonstrating his potential as a German football star.
With Isak apparently negotiating a move to Liverpool, Woltemade must swiftly adjust to St. James’ Park. However, he was not registered in time for Newcastle’s match against Leeds United on Saturday.
The deal pleased Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who said Woltemade’s skills match the club’s attacking demands.
We are pleased to finalise Nick’s signing promptly. He is exactly what we need to strengthen our offensive “Howe stated.
Germany has called up the 1.98-meter attacker, who has two caps, for September World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Northern Ireland.
Woltemade said his relocation was a career milestone. “It’s a big step in my life to leave Germany, but everybody has welcomed me so well, and it already feels like family,” remarked.
